Recently, the field related to osthol chemical raw materials has shown a multifaceted development trend.
In terms of the market, an industry market survey report from April 2025 indicates that the global osthol market has maintained an average annual growth rate of over 10% in recent years, with China emerging as the world's largest consumer of osthol. With the accelerated modernization of traditional Chinese medicine and consumers' pursuit of natural health products, it is expected that the osthol market will continue to expand in the coming years. From the perspective of raw materials, a report from the Chinese Herbal Medicine World Network on July 24, 2025, stated that the production of fructus cnidii has ended, with a significant output of new goods this year. After the production period, the market has declined, and the recent supply and sales of goods are normal. Currently, the market quotation for fructus cnidii from pharmaceutical factories is between 13-14 yuan, and the quotation for sieved and sliced products is between 18-20 yuan. Fluctuations in raw material prices may have a certain impact on the production cost of osthol chemical raw materials.
In terms of applied research, the study of osthol in the pharmaceutical field has been continuously deepened. On March 31, 2025, the team led by Professors Guo Yong and Yang Ruige from the School of Pharmacy, Hengyang Medical College, University of South China, designed and synthesized pyridinium quaternary ammonium salt osthol derivatives 8u and 8ac based on the natural product osthol. At a dose of 4 mg/kg, these derivatives exhibited superior therapeutic effects to vancomycin in a mouse skin abscess model infected with MRSA. Furthermore, 8ac also demonstrated comparable antibacterial efficacy to vancomycin in a systemic infection sepsis model. This research is of great significance for the development of new antibacterial drugs and addressing the issue of bacterial resistance. Additionally, osthol has made new progress in the field of pesticides. On May 21, 2024, Jiangxi Jiangnan Lv'an Ecological Technology Co., Ltd. obtained approval for the expansion registration of its 0.5% osthol aqueous emulsion product, with the newly added registered crops/sites and control targets being grassland locusts. This marks the first time that osthol has been registered in China for the control of locusts. Its main antibacterial mechanism is to affect the growth of fungal cell walls, leading to extensive breakage of hyphae, while inhibiting the growth of pathogen hyphae. The main insecticidal mechanism is to act on the nervous system of pests, causing non-functional contraction of insect muscles, ultimately leading to exhaustion and death.
Overall, osthol, a chemical raw material, boasts a vast market prospect due to its unique advantages in the fields of medicine and pesticide. Meanwhile, relevant research innovations are continuously injecting new impetus into its industrial development.
